Majella
Peter is representing the Umpila clan group on the Every Child Is Special
project. Umpila land boundary is situated south east of Coen,
along the coast in between Lama lama, Southern Kaanju and Uthungunau
traditional lands.
Majella inherits the Umpila clan from her father’s side.
She is also apart of the Lama lama clan group from her mother’s
side.
Majella was born in Cairns, she spent most of her life growing
up in the community and away at boarding school at Atherton High
in the Tablelands and doing her final year, year 12 at Bamaga
High in Bamaga.
Majella has worked on various work experience in hospitality
at Tjapukai Tourism and Macuree Harbor in Cairns.
Apart of the project, Majella will be doing a training program
that she will be undertaking a Certificate III in Indigenous Cultural
Transmission. She has chosen to be a Tutor so that she can learn
and understand more about her clan, also passing knowledge to
the younger generation.
Majella is a new mum to a one month year old baby girl named
Verona. Baby Verona attends work with her mother on the project.
Majella believes that the Every Child Is Special project will help
strengthen the Coen community by bringing the different clans
together to help with culture survival and education, and its
support for the young community to be independent and to become
future leaders.
Majella also believe that through this project, it will give
her the support and respect as a role model by her community,
by being a role model for the younger generation she looks at
working towards making positive changes within her community.
Majella is looking forward to completing her certificate. She
hopes that completing this certificate will help her to future
studies, upgrade her skills and give her confidence to achieving
all of that.
She wants to make a better future for her daughter, family and
her community.
