Ann
lives in Coen on Cape York Peninsula and works for the Coen Regional
Aboriginal Corporation. She is the Coordinator for the Land &
Sea Management Centre.
Ann was instrumental in establishing this centre and worked closely
with the traditional owners in the Coen sub-region to resolve their
land and sea management issues. She has written a National and Cultural
Resource Management Plan for the established homelands that lie
within the Coen sub-region. Ann believes that traditional owners
can use their plan to enhance the natural and cultural resources
on homelands in practical and appropriate land management practices.
Thus not only benefiting the clan groups within the Coen sub-region
in economic development but to give the wider community an insight
into what indigenous people see as essential, to the future survival
of their identity, as indigenous people in Australia.
Ann also represents her clan on numerous Land Trust Committees.
The boards she sits on are:
- Cape York Partnerships
- Chair – Coen Parent Education Group,
addressing political views and issues on indigenous education
- Director – Coen Regional Aboriginal Corporation,
addressing Employment, Welfare Reform, Education, Justice Issues,
Cultural Transmission, Housing, Training, Homeland Development,
Sports & Recreation, Health, Economic Development and representing
the C.R.A.C on the Negotiation Table.
- Cape York Institute for Policy and Leadership,
which promotes indigenous participation in public policy and debates.
- Apunipima Cape York Health Council, addressing
indigenous health issues across Cape York.
- Cape York Land Council, which assists Aboriginal
people of Cape York with Native Title, matters affecting their
traditional lands and sea.
- N.A.I.L.S.M.A – Northern Australian
Indigenous Land & Sea Management Alliance.
- C.Y.T.R.I.W.G – Cape York Tenure
Resolution Implementation Working Group, representing
Balkanu Development Corporation. CYTRIWG works on long –
term framework for establishing true partnerships between the
State Government and Traditional owners in progressing tenure
resolution and future management regimes on Cape York Peninsula.
Ann is passionate about Indigenous Education Reform for Cape York
children. She believes that for aboriginal people to survive in
today’s society, our children need to be educated and to have
the best education possible. This can only be achieved if parents
demand quality education and take reasonability by supporting their
children’s education.
When Ann is not in traveling the country to attend meetings, or
working within her community, you will find her at a book store
indulging her love of reading.
