Partners

CYP aims to work with public and private agencies to develop and implement a comprehensive agenda to achieve the fundamental structural changes necessary to enable communities, clans, families, and individuals to move beyond passive welfare, to effect a social recovery and to actively participate in the economy. CYP has now developed partnerships with all sectors:

State Government:

Premier Peter Beatty and Noel PearsonFrom 1999 the Queensland Premier Peter Beattie committed the Queensland Government to develop partnerships in Cape York. Since then the partnerships process has been well advanced.

Following a comprehensive response to the issues raised by the Fitzgerald Cape York Justice Study, a partnerships unit is now being established comprising CYP (Community) and CYP (Government). The capacity now exists for whole-of-government coordination in Cape York and for partnerships - based on negotiation - to be developed between Queensland agencies and Aboriginal people.

Private and Philanthropic

Cape York regional organisations have been working with the private and philanthropic sectors and an interface for partnerships with these sectors has been established: Indigenous Enterprise Partnerships (IEP).

A board comprising voluntary directors associated with The Body Shop, Westpac, Boston Consulting Group, The Myer Foundation, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT), Harvard Business School as well as indigenous representatives runs IEP. www.iep.net.au IEP allows for private sector and philanthropic partnerships to be developed - and many partnerships projects are well advanced in Cape York.

Commonwealth Government

The Commonwealth Government has also announced that it will be participating in the Cape York Partnerships process through its Indigenous Partnerships Taskforce which is being trialled in 8 sites across the country. Cape York is one of the 8 sites.

The Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR) is the lead Commonwealth agency responsible for Cape York. Again, this provides the opportunity for whole-of-government coordination between Commonwealth agencies and for negotiated partnerships.

"Cape York Partnerships is not about presenting pre-set solutions. It is important for everyone involved to understand that these are suggestions and ideas only. ..Cape York Partnerships is my Government's genuine effort to find a way forward."
