Kevin O'Brien
Kevin's story
Kevin is a member of the Keriwi (Hammond Island) community and is a descendent of the Kaurereg and Meriam Mir peoples of the Torres Strait Islands. He was born in Melbourne and has lived mostly in Brisbane where he was educated and his architectural practice is now based.
Kevin's achievements
Kevin graduated from the University of Queensland (UQ) in 1995 with a Bachelor of Architecture, and in 2006 with a Master of Philosophy (by design). He was a Churchill Scholar in 2000. In 2006 he established Kevin O'Brien Architects in Brisbane and in 2009 was appointed an Adjunct Professor in the School of Design, Faculty of Built Environment and Engineering at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT).
Kevin has worked extensively with Indigenous communities in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria on arts, health, education, correctional, commercial and housing projects. The focus in all of these projects has been the inclusion of local cultural knowledge together with technical construction research to pursue a sustainable built environment.
