Income Management History
Family Income Management Program
One of the earliest convictions of Cape York Partnerships was that the starting point for building stronger families is the need to manage individual and family incomes. The Family Income Management Project was conceived in 2000 and a funding request for a feasibility study was submitted to the Australian Government.
Trialling of the Program
With support from government and Westpac through their secondment program, Aurukun, Coen and Mossman Gorge first trialled Family Income Management from June 2002 to July 2004.
Program Attracts Widespread Interest
The voluntary program attracted large numbers of participants who saw that better management of their income could significantly improve their standard of living. The project has since expanded to Hope Vale, Cooktown and Napranum.
Recommended Support Service
In 2008 Family Income Management became one of the support services available to community members who are recommended by the Family Responsibilities Commission to establish budgets to manage their income.
